My Favorite Things: Months 5 & 6

H & M Hat and Mittens:  These have by far been the most warm & cozy of all Liam's winter accessories!  Not to mention the adorable factor.  He pretty much wears this hat on a daily basis right now.

UGG Bixbee BootiesThese are only the shoes Liam wears right now.  They are so easy to put on, and again are super warm!  Liam has pretty big feet so I bought him the 2/3 size which is technically 12-24 months but they have fit him since 5 months.  I love these so much I even bought a pair for one of my nieces in pink!

Luv U Zoo Jumperoo:  Liam is a huge fan of this!  At 6 months, he's just now getting into the jumping part of it.   But he loves all the doodads on it.  I like that it isn't a complete eye sore.  :-)  He spends half his time in here trying to grab the hanging monkey & hippo; I can watch him do this all day.  This jumperoo has also given me a little bit of hands free time to do things like cook dinner.  My only complaint is that the legs holes are a little bit small so getting him in and out is slightly tricky.  He can also barely touch the ground even on the lowest setting...and my baby is tall!  There is still plenty of room to grow into this

CJ's BUTTer:  I am most excited about this stuff right now!  While I love coconut oil as a diaper rash cream, it has nothing on CJ's BUTTer.  I had heard all about this stuff, but it took me awhile to give it a try.  It comes in some of the most amazing scents: Blueberry Crumble, Monkey Farts, My Pixie Pie, Lavender, Tea Tree...just to name a few.  I want to try them all!  I'm already waiting to run out of my current tube so I can buy some more!  Next time I'll probably buy the sampler pack just so I can have lots of scents!  During diaper changes, I'm literally looking for any possible redness on Liam, just so I can use it.  Most times I lather it on him simply for good measure.  I love everything about this stuff! :-)

Infantino Stick & Spin Monkey:  Liam is still loving all of his Infantino toys!  This little monkey is meant for the high chair, but Liam likes to play with it even when it's not stuck to anything.  Sometimes we even add it to his jumperoo...as if that needs more things on it!  Sometimes he's able to unsuction it, but rarely.

Aden & Anais Burpy Bib:  Love all our Aden & Anais products as well!  This bib is by far the best one we have.  It's quite big, so it covers his entire front, as well as his shoulders.  This one catches all his crazy drool and some!  Plus I love all the fun prints.

6 Months Old

6 Months Old

Height: 28 inches (92%)

Weight: 17 lbs 4 oz (47%)

Head: 44 cm (58%)

Clothes:  Oh how my boy grows.  Still in 6-9 or 6-12 month items, but some of them are starting to get snug already...it's ridiculous!

Eating:  Still loving on Mama's milk; I love how he engages with me during our nursing sessions.  This time has only become more & more special, even with how busy he is!  In addition, last week we started introducing solids!  We are using the baby led weaning method, so we skipped purees are went straight into finger foods.  I'm going to post about this separately because there is just so much to share!

Sleeping: Sleep...who needs it?!  Liam is still not sleeping well.  It's very hard to put him down for the night, and he wakes up almost every hour.  We have had a few rare nights that he has slept for 4 hours straight, but that is definitely not the norm.  We've been trying out a more strict bedtime routine, but unfortunately that hasn't helped.  We are still putting him in his crib to start (most nights we're successful with this), but for most of the rest of the night we are back to co-sleeping.  My only saving grace is that Liam & I stay in bed til around 8:30 or 9; unfortunately, Conor doesn't have this luxury.  I feel so bad for him when he wakes up early for work each day.  Still hoping this is a phase and that it will pass... Our pediatrician wants us to sleep train him, but I'm just not sure that's for us.

Diapering:  Only cloth on this baby's bum!  Now that we are in Salt Lake City, I've had to adjust my diaper wash routine a bit.  The water is very hard here which complicates things a bit.  We're going to install a water softner, but in the mean time I'm adding Calgon to my diaper laundry and that seems to be doing the trick and keeping them nice & clean!  I'm also gonna be purchasing a diaper sprayer soon since Liam has started on solids and I'll need to start rinsing some of his diapers now.  I'll definitely be posting about this experience!

Trips:  We spent a week in Montana right after Christmas.  Liam has been quite the trooper during our long car rides, we are lucky!  We also officially moved to Utah, so that was a long road trip as well.  Yes, we drove... seemed much easier than flying with a baby AND a cat!  To break up the drive we stayed the night in some teeny tiny town in Oregon.  Adding that to Liam's states list, he's been to 7 states at only 6 months old!
1. Washington
2. Idaho
3. Montana
4. Utah
5.  Pennsylvania
6. Delaware
7. Oregon

Playtime:  Liam is still constantly moving/wiggling.  I can't even imagine what it will be like when he starts to crawl & walk!  He loves the jumper when got him for Christmas, but is more interested in all the fun toys on it than the actually jumping part.  Although, this past week he has started to get those legs moving up & down a little bit more.  Another new toy of his is the Playskool take apart truck.  This originally belonged to his Grandpa and then to Conor; now, it is Liam's.  I love the fact that this is a vintage, wood truck!  So special to the family.  He's still super into books (turning the pages and putting them in his mouth)!  Our current favorite for bedtime is Little Hoot!  I just crack up when the owls practice pondering and staring, too funny!  His new thing he loves to do is push a ball back and forth with Conor or I.  Now that this little man can sit up that is all he wants to do.  Sit, sit, sit!  Our new house has an extra 1000 square feet, so Liam will have an official playroom here!  I can't wait to design it...the ideas are already brewing.  I'm also in the process of re-doing his nursery.  Can't wait to post about these new projects!

Likes:  Tickles!  Oh my goodness, Dad really gets Liam howling with laughter during some tickle sessions.  Sometimes just the anticipation of tickles to come sends him roaring into laughs.  And it is the absolute sweetest sound I have ever heard.  I can't get him to laugh nearly as hard as Conor can, but when I do my heart just melts.  He's also a big fan of trying to stand in the tub, even though I continually tell him the number 1 rule of bath time is "No standing in the tub"!  Liam has found a new obsession for buttons and zippers and anything of the like on our clothing.  Sometimes he gets a little frustrated that those buttons won't come off!  Another thing that really gets him laughing is being tossed in the air.  I count to three before I do it, so he knows what is coming.  By 3, his little body goes limp as he prepares to be tossed up high and he does a funny tuck mid-air and giggles.  So stinking cute!  Little L is pretty awesome!  And his absolutely favorite thing has to be our cat Charlie!  If the cat is in his sights, he has both hands out reaching for Charlie and talking to him like crazy.  Charlie really likes Liam too and comes and snuggles us throughout the day.  He is very patient and doesn't seem to mind when Liam pulls his tail...or takes a big chunk of fur with him...

Milestones:  Liam is officially sitting up on his own and hasn't looked back since!  He actually did it for the first time on Christmas Eve at exactly 5 months old, but of course did it after I had written that post!  He's still rolling over tummy to back, but only for my eyes.  I have yet to see him go back to belly though.  Liam is much more interested in sitting to do any rolling.  All in his own time I suppose!

Best Moment:  Finding out Liam is going to have a new cousin in July!  We are more than thrilled!  I'm secretly hoping it's a boy because we don't have any nephews yet...

Hop-a-long Boots & A Pistol That Shoots

The day after Christmas we were in the car and driving to Montana for Christmas with the Keenan Family!  We had not spent much time there since Liam was born, so we were looking forward to spending an entire week there.  Everyone was excited to see Liam and there was plenty of baby oogling as soon as we walked in the door.  Liam was loving on all the new faces!

The evening was full of gift giving, good food, and plenty of cheer.  Liam was more than spoiled by all his aunts & uncles and Grandparents!  He even received his 1st pair of Carharts... can't wait til he fits into those!  Throw on a flannel shirt and he'll be the cutest little Montana boy ever!  Unfortunately, Uncle Kyle was in Hawaii for Christmas this year, so we missed him during our visit.  Luckily, we had plenty of quality time with the rest of the family.

Conor's parents own an apartment unit right in downtown Bigfork, so the three of us had our own little place to stay.  It felt like a home away from home since we all had been traveling so much that month!  I had my own washer & dryer to do all our laundry (which there is plenty of with a baby) and keep up with Liam's cloth diapers.  The apartment is also just one block down from Conor's parent's restaurant.  Each morning Conor would take Liam there early in the morning to spend time with the Grandparents, and let me catch a few extra zzz's.  Then, I would meet them there later for breakfast. Conor loved being back in the BFI kitchen where he grew up with a saute pan in hand. It was so wonderful to be moving at a much slower pace and just enjoy our time together with family.

I was treated to amazing meals that week, choosing something different off the menu at their restaurant almost every night!  I always know I'm going to eat well in Montana.  :-) Liam even helped Grandpa in the kitchen on occasion!  I had my fair share of ice cream during our visit!  Conor's sister Marissa and her husband Sam own Sweet Peaks where they make the most delicious ice cream; it's unbelievable!  Shameless plug I know, but I literally have no self control when it comes to Sweet Peaks.  This visit, I was particular obsessed with their Coffee Traders Espresso ice cream and still can't get it out of my mind.  'Tis the season... Eat. Drink. Be Merry.

In between all the family fun, Conor & I did a little car shopping!  My honda had a bad transmission, and we were worried it was going to just fall out at any point.  This made me so nervous, especially when I was driving around with Liam.  I was also ready to upgrade to an SUV.  Now that we have Liam, we have a lot more "stuff"!  We desperately needed a bigger car for our growing family and all the road trips we take.  After looking around a few test drives, we decided on an Audi Q7!  I love it; finally, Liam & I are driving around in style! :-)

Our last night in Montana was New Years Eve!  In years past, we've hit the bars pretty hard with Sam & Marissa in Whitefish.  Although that still sounds enticing at times, we enjoyed a much more low key evening with our little boy!  We had another amazing meal at the Bigfork Inn (the Keenan Family restaurant) and then went back to the apartment on Main Street for a game night!  Shortly before midnight everyone headed back to the restaurant to ring in the new year, but Little L was done for the night.  I stayed behind and nursed him to sleep, and reflected on what an incredible year 2012 was.  To my surprise, Conor walked back with two glasses of champagne just in time to give me a kiss as the clock tower at the library struck midnight and began playing Auld Lang Syne in bells echoing down the street!  Perfect end to the evening and the year!

Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow...

This Christmas was the best ever!  Having a baby to share all the joy with was such an incredible feeling.  And seeing Christmas lights glistening in his little eyes...awww, melts my heart!  It was such a different experience having little ones around; but now, I can't imagine it any other way!

My mom & I were really on top of all our Christmas shopping this year.  There was no last minute running around or Christmas Eve present wrapping; it felt good to be so prepared!  I thought that all the shopping would be pretty difficult with a baby, but thanks to my Baby Hawk it was a breeze!  I put Liam in that carrier for all of our shopping excursions, and he absolutely loved it!  He gets to be close to Mama but can check out everything that is going on around him.  I can't even imagine trying to navigate through small stores or busy malls with a stroller.  Baby wearing is so easy!

I usually have an emotional breakdown a rough time with change, especially when it comes to holiday traditions, but now that Liam is in our family I am beginning to look forward to the changes and to developing our own traditions.  Christmas Eve morning was spent relaxing over a delicious breakfast of sausage fondue casserole (a Simpson tradition) and gin fizzes...a more recent Conor & Laura addition.  We then went to an early afternoon Church service, so we had plenty of time to prep for Christmas Eve dinner with all the extended family.  I was in my happy place that evening: snow falling, fire crackling, Christmas music playing softly, and glasses clinking as we all celebrated together.

If you're wondering if this is the same dress I wore at Thanksgiving, you're right!
It's practically impossible to find a nice dress that I am able to easily nurse in;
so, this little gem made a frequent appearance throughout the holidays!  I was
able to rock it with heels as well as my black hunter boots!

That Christmas Eve night Liam sat up by himself for the first time, at exactly 5 months old!  I could not have been a prouder mama! I was really hoping to get a picture of him sitting in front of the Christmas tree...perfect timing!  And of course, I was excited to have a red diaper for such an occasion!  Using cloth diapers takes "dressing" the baby to a whole new level with all the color and print options!

I couldn't wait for Liam to go to bed so that Santa could come!  We read How the Grinch Stole Christmas, made sure all the whos lay asnooze, and ever so gently placed Liam in his crib.  Conor & I had assembled Liam's jumparoo in the present wrapping room and put some red bows on it, then we went to put the jumparoo under the tree...  Rule #1: all gifts that need to be assembled should be done so in the same room as the Christmas tree!  We realized this when trying to move his jumparoo downstairs; luckily, with some maneuvering we were able to squeeze it through the doorway, phew!  Christmas crisis averted!

This year we had many more stockings with the addition of grandkids and my new sisters-in-law!  With all the stockings hung, I was ready to hit the sheets too! Yes, my Mom still fills my stocking  :-)  Conor is slowly taking over that job, but I'm in no hurry for that to happen.

Christmas morning arrived, and I felt the same way I did when I was 5 years old.  Pure excitement!  We take things slow in the Simpson household, so we started our morning with the annual Simpson Family Christmas walk!  I love getting some fresh air in the morning and enjoying the beautiful scenery after it has snowed.  The trees were absolutely breathtaking.  I also love seeing families inside their homes all gathered around their Christmas trees opening presents.  This is something I dreaded in high school, but now I so look forward to it!

Back at the house we enjoyed my Mom's homemade cinnamon rolls, Conor's quiche, & mimosas!  After the walk, we are all ready for a morning feast!  Then it's straight into present opening.  We start with our stockings and open gifts one at a time starting with the youngest.  I love this tradition because it makes the whole experience last longer, you get to see what every one gets, and it teaches patience to the little ones.  All of our stocking gifts are wrapped adding to the excitement!  Liam was loving all the wrapping paper and ribbon, but we had to keep our eye on him because everything was going straight into his mouth!

Now that both of my brothers each have their own families, everyone is extra busy!  My brother Ryan and his family stopped by for some present opening midday before spending time with the inlaws, and then my brother Jon & his family joined us for our Christmas dinner of Prime Rib!  I have to say, I was absolutely exhausted by the end of the day.  Liam keeps me pretty busy these days, and with all the excitement of Christmas he didn't nap much the entire day!

A huge thank you to my parents (Nana & Pops) for giving us another wonderful Christmas!  Although I had been very stressed out about our impending move and pretty much living out of a suitcase with Liam, they still made the whole holiday so special for us.  Maybe we will be hosting them at our house sometime in the next few years... ;-)

We went to bed early that night, because the next morning we packed up
and drove to Montana for Christmas with the Keenan Family! Christmas blog Part 2 is coming up next!
