Preschool is the New Ivy League

Liam will be starting preschool in the Fall. FALL. As in September. As in 6 months from now. So naturally, I assumed I had plenty of time to tour preschools & enroll Liam. It was on my to-do list for sometime in late spring. Then, oh then, Colleen made a brief comment about already having her son enrolled. Immediate panic ensued. What?! Am I supposed to be on top of this now? Why didn't anyone tell me? I'm not ready for this!!!

Fortunately Conor & I had talked about preschool before, so I at least had a starting point. We want Liam to attend a Montessori school, and I had received some recommendations for one in particular that was supposed to be the best in the "valley". I quickly called up the school and had a tour scheduled for later in the week. To say we were impressed, would be quite the understatement! We loved the school; it will be a perfect fit for Liam. Their teachings & ideals line up perfectly with our gentle parenting approach. We didn't need to have much of a discussion; we were ready to enroll him without even touring other schools!

Then came the bad news... There was already a wait list! A wait list for two day a week preschool! I was so angry at myself for not taking care of this sooner! We always knew we wanted to send Liam to private school, so I should have known that it may be difficult to get him in somewhere. We still submitted an application that day and found out hat we are number one or two on the wait list. This is at least somewhat promising. But the planner in me is having a heart attack! We could technically find out any day if Liam gets a spot (if someone pulls out, moves, etc.) or we may not know until after the first day of school when they see who shows up. I can't wait that long! The not knowing just kills me! I don't want Liam to miss the first day of school!!! There is so much time between now & September for me to stress, so I might as well try to keep the anxiety at bay for now.

Just in case Liam never gets a spot, we may consider having a second Montessori school as a back up. Otherwise our plan is to send Liam to the preschool at our local Catholic School. While I'm sure this will still be a great place for our little boy, it definitely doesn't have all the bells, whistles, & shine that the Montessori does. Who knows where he will be enrolled come September and that just bugs me! Not to mention the fact that my baby will be going to school; that amount of growing up is a tough concept in itself!

So a little PSA...
if you'll have a three year old come Fall and have yet to enroll them in preschool, get on it!!!
Also, maybe start looking into colleges as well...

  1. That is crazy!!! We are sending Waverly next year too & in the process of looking into some - it's definitely a stressful feeling! Fingers crossed you guys get in, they would be lucky to have Liam! ;)

  2. Oh, lady, try not to stress too much. I know coming from a non mom that seems a bit flippant, but Liam will be great wherever he goes to preschool, just like college. I think it's smart you have a back up plan. Who knows, maybe the Catholic school will be the perfect fit for him. :)

  3. Totally feel your sentiments girlfriend! I definitely wavered back and forth before committing to the thought of sending Lily at the ripe age of three. Part of me is excited for the fall, but the other part of me feels like I'm losing my baby. Totally the reason why I neglected to enroll sooner and thus was wait listed. Thankfully I jumped on the wagon soon enough to hopefully still be guaranteed a spot once fall comes as well. So hard not knowing for sure, especially when it is your top school. Who knew preschool is truly the new ivy league! haha Great way to put it!

  4. Oh I hope Liam gets in! I love the Montessori program but the one by us only does 5 full days a week for his age! I guess they have enough parents who need that so why take less money just so my kid can go. Anyway, we don't need or want that so he's going to a little Christian based preschool this fall. I had heard preschools fill up super fast so I think I was first at submitting our deposit back in January. I can only imagine what applying for colleges will be like when they are that age!

  5. Isn't it insane? I put Louise on a waitlist the day I found out I was pregnant, and she STILL doesn't have a spot - talk about crazy! (Siblings of current students get first priority, and Cam doesn't go to that school now.) We are on the wait list at three places for INFANT care...not even pre-school! BUT, it always works out, right?

  6. Yes, the whole preschool things totally stresses me out. I knew this was coming, but I am not ready for this little boy to grow up..!! :) Although, we may be waiting another year before switching.
I totally get it though, the wait has got to be so stressful!! I hope it all works out as you'd like. What an exciting new chapter for your family. :)

  7. That's completely insane!! Granite, we live in a very small town so there aren't really even "preschools" but I couldn't imagine that stress! Maybe we just got really lucky in the fact that there were only 3 other kids in Wyatt's class this year. I guess we could've ended up on a wait list. WOW, never though of that., that is stressful! So sorry!

  8. Oh the dreaded wait lists!! I work in administration for a non-profit child care and preschool organization and I put my baby on the waitlist as soon as I could and I still don't know if I'll have a spot when my maternity leave is up! It's crazy!

  10. Carter just started at montessori last week! I was so impressed with it and there wasn't a doubt in my mind that it's the perfect place for him. He's only gone 2 days so far bc of snow days but so far he really likes it!! I'm sure someone will back out and a spot will open up for Liam!

  11. That is just insane! I haven't even thought about this yet... not for my three year old anyway... I've thought about sending her to preschool when she's 4... I don't know a lot of parents send them at 3, and I guess I could for the social aspect. Maybe I should look into it.... ugh

    1. In the states it's fairly common for 3 year olds to attend 2-day a week preschool, and then 4 year olds attend 3-day a week preschool. I'm not one that believes this is necessary by any means, but Liam talks about school non stop and seems ready. I think he will love it!

  12. Oh geez! Wait list for preschool? Crazy! Mac has been going to nursery school for a few months and we love it. I need to enroll him for next fall pretty soon, I guess. Thanks for the reminder.

  13. Thank goodness I read this now when my kid is only 1.5; I feel like I better put him on a wait list or something...

  14. It's crazy! I sent my two older kids to the same preschool, so I got second round registration for my 3 year old, because we were a returning family. She still ended up first on the wait list, but we got the call the other day that she got in! Phew! Good luck!

  15. Oh gosh, who knew?? Mason goes to preschool now and to be honest, I was SHOCKED when they told me that he could go at two. TWO seems so young! But it has been AMAZING for him. He head learned and grown so much and I can totally see a change in him. I think Liam will love it! Mason was on a waiting list at first also and they called me only a couple months later. Crossing my fingers for you guys!

  16. YES! I had no idea you had to be SO on top of it. Thank goodness for the experience of other bloggers ha. I'd be so behind. Aria isn't going in the fall so I'm ready for whenever the time comes. I hope he gets a spot though. Sounds fantastic.
