Status: Potty Trained

Yes friends, it has happened.  Liam is now an underpants wearing, potty using grown up!  It happened quickly, in literally one week, and Conor & I are thrilled to be done with diapers for... a whole 2 months!  I first shared the news on Instagram, and you all had just the sweetest comments!  Some wanted to know all about the magic or our secrets, and while it was all Liam's doing, I will still share our experience...

We've had a little potty since around when Liam turned two.  We talked about it occasionally and just had it available in case he ever showed an interest in using it.  He had no problem sitting on it, and in fact would spend close to an hour at a time on it if we would read books with him.  Our boys loves his books.  But not once, in all those months & days of sitting & reading did he pee in the potty.  Never.  Not even on accident.  Still, we never felt rushed to get him trained and knew that he would do it in his own timing when he was ready.

Well about two weeks ago, we started noticing that Liam was going through a huge mental leap.  His conversations with us were becoming more in depth & he was just acting like a new boy (for better & sometimes for worse); it really felt like he was growing right before us.  He started eating like crazy and taking super long naps, so I knew we were in the middle of a growth spurt!  I didn't think any thing of this at the time, but in hindsight it makes sense that this happened right before he decided to potty train himself.

So, a friend just happened to give us a couple of potty books on a Thursday, we read them one time and then forgot about it.  Perhaps this triggered something, but we will never know for sure.  On Saturday night Liam wanted to be a naked nudey after bath time, so I reminded him that he didn't have a diaper on and should use the potty if he needed to pee.  Just a simple phrase that I've said to him many a time.  And then not 5 minutes later he walked over to his potty and peed!  I was in shock!  We clapped, we cheered, we ran upstairs to tell Daddy!  I was pumped & Liam was beaming with pride!

The next two days Liam wore undies just while we were at home and continued to use the potty.  He may have one accident a day, but in general he was nailing it!  We prompted him often and usually he would go straight to his potty.  After a couple of successful days, we ditched the day time diapers all together, even when we were out & about.  He was a bit nervous of public toilets at first; he said they were loud, and damn some of them are!  And those automatic flushers potentially going off while you are still sitting...?  Terrifying business.  So we brought his little potty in the car with us when we left the house.

Again he nailed it in a couple of days and we were accident free!  Pooping in the potty took a couple more days, because apparently that comes with its own set of fears.  Who knew.  And then after a few more days, Liam decided he was ready to wear undies full-time, even to bed...  We were incredibly nervous going into that first night!  He had one accident that night, but has otherwise been successful at staying dry!!!  Typically he pees 1-2 times during the night when he wakes up, but he lets us know if he needs to go.  We don't intentionally wake him or anything.

All of that simply took one week.  No staying home for days on end.  No crazy "boot camp" or training methods.  No bribery, although there were a few treats involved here or there.  Generally, he was just so excited to use the potty that our praise was enough!  I'm thrilled that he did this all on his own time and that we never pushed it.  A week later, we don't even have to prompt him anymore; he simply tells us when he needs to go!  Conor & I are still in awe that this just happened.

Hopefully this post gives some of you a little confidence & a little patience
in knowing that it will happen for your toddler at the right time!

And you're welcome for not sharing any ridiculous potty pictures.
I know you were worried there for a bit! :-)

  1. Yay Liam! I think the key here is that you waited for him to be ready! No kid goes to kindergarten in diapers so I think we all need to calm down a little and just let these things happen. I've mentioned it before but I think it's funny that noah likes to read on the toilet just like Liam was doing!

  2. That's just so amazing!! I've been going back and forth on getting a little potty, and I think the answer is yes. Have you limited drinks in the evening or after dinner? I've heard of people doing that and I'm just curious what your take is.

  3. I think this tends to be the case with most things. We push and push. They will know when they are ready. Great job, momma!

  4. love it! Way to go Liam! I'm totally good with letting Aria show me when she is ready. But, I get those comments... You should be potty training her, why isn't she going on the potty, etc. Funny, unsolicited advice is rampant in the parenting game but potty training is really the only spot I've gotten it. I just don't feel the need to push her into it! So it is always great to hear of these child-led type potty training scenarios!

  5. No way!! That is SO AWESOME! I keep thinking Mia is ready to potty train... like yesterday.... I happened to look at the monitor (when I assumed Mia was napping because she had been in her crib for an hour and a half!) just in time to see a bare little bum.... I ran into her room just as she's pulling her pants up while holding her diaper in her hand with a huge smile on her face, ha ha! Things like that keep happening, she just wants to be diaper free! I really need to be more diligent in taking her potty and asking her if she wants to go! But I am totally clueless as to how to teach her to poop in the toilet. She's never done it and I don't know how to tell her!

  7. Love this! Lily was the same way, just woke up one day and was potty trained. It's crazy. I'm a firm believer that when they are ready, they are definitely ready. I'm always appalled at the boot camps and such seems it would give things a bit of a set back, especially if the kiddo isn't ready. Yay Liam!

  9. YAYYYYYYY!!!! That is SO AWESOME! We have a little potty but I have it tucked away in the closet. I'm thinking I need to take it out. Even if Mason just sits on it to read a book, at least he's kinda getting the concept, and if I am lucky enough, maybe Liam can rub off on him and he can train himself too! (A mom can dream...)

  13. Awesome awesome!! That is so cool, you've got to be so proud. Now that you mention how he was eating/sleeping, I think we've had a recent growth spurt also; crazy how they advance in ways in just a matter of days. (The Mr. could tell T's speech was better/more even in the week he was gone!!) I'm really nervous, once we get there about going out and about those first few times without a diaper. How does he do it in the middle of the night/naps? Get up and go by himself or do you guys help him?

  14. This is so motivating reading this! My little guy is just 16 months and seems interested in what "going potty" is but I was a bit baffled as to how I was going to make the switch. Now I know if I just wait it out it will probably be a lot easier for everyone :) And seriously; I can't believe some of the "boot camps" there are for potty training!

    1. Definitely wait it out! You never know when they'll be ready. So jump on it early, but others take awhile. Especially the boys!

  15. This is awesome news!! :) My little man has been going on the potty on and off for about 2 months...so ready for him to decide to make it permanent! You are right...there is just no forcing it, especially with someone as stubborn as my little guy is.
