Our Weeklong Memorial Day Getaway

Once again, Conor had a work trip.  So once again, I flew up to Washington with the boys!  The help of Nana is too great to resist.  Plus, it timed out perfectly to have Conor join us there for a long Memorial Day weekend once he was done with business!  Win, win!
I honestly dream about the day that we might possibly be able to move back to my hometown!  And while I probably romanticize it a bit in my head, I know that it would be amazing to have my boys with their grandparents & cousins all the time.  Our trips back to Spokane give me a sweet taste of what life could be like!  My mom always gets up extra early to hit the gym while we are all still sleeping, so that she is back not long after we wake.  She always brings lattes & bagels, and it is quite possibly the best way to start the day!  Often we don't do anything particularly exciting, instead just enjoying an ordinary day with her.  But we do like to squeeze in at least one lunch date!  The toddler may have had to go to the bathroom 3+ times because of his crazy water intake, but there was wine & it was some of my favorite mother/daughter time.
As the boys grow, I love seeing them playing the same yard I grew up.  Waiting on the same front steps for Pops to get home from work.  Playing on the same basketball hoop where I spent countless hours with my brother.  One of the evenings my brother brought his littlest over to join us for dinner.  No spouses.  It was such a surreal moment for me, full of nostalgia.  We spent numerous dinners together around that exact same table, and now here we are back in that place but with our own kids.  I want nights like that more often!

After just a few days in Spokane, we all drove out to the lakehouse for a long weekend!  This was Finn's first visit where he really had a chance to explore.  I loved that I could let him out of the house to just wander the yard, the gardens, the woods.  There were no roads to keep him out of; no big rules.  His favorite thing was watching the giant woodpecker, whom had a bright red head and was incredibly noisy.  Finn followed Liam all over hoping he would stay & play in the treehouse or the sandbox.  It's simply the perfect oasis for the boys!

I could feel my body instantly relax as soon as we arrived.  The lakehouse has recently become such a getaway for me.  I love having my family all in one place.  There is something special about goodnight kisses & morning maple bar runs with the grandparents.  The first couple days brought cooler temperatures, so we ventured into Coeur d'Alene for our usual park play & lunch outing.  The cousins ran wild together; I could not get enough of them.  No matter how infrequent our visits sometimes feel, they always act like the best of friends.  Their excitement to see one another is the sweetest!  In anticipation of a weekend full of good eats & drinks, we filled up growlers, Chanilla (cherry vanilla) & basil mint cider for the win, & stopped in at the in-laws newest icecream joint!  While Conor may still need Spokane to grow on him a bit, Coeur d'Alene is slowly winning him over...

Finally on our last day it was warm enough for some boating!  Finn loved it, especially the driving part!  And Conor & Liam took the very first plunge into the lake.  I don't think he quite realized how cold it would be; the shock factor was all over his face.  Once he caught his breath he managed to say "It's too wet!  There's too much water!" in one of the most priceless moments yet.  But, after a quick dry off, he was back in the lake!  Both my boys love water; I cannot wait to be back in July when surely we will spend all day on the boat!

I was with my parents for an entire week, and I still wasn't ready to leave.  I never tire of my time with them.  Liam cried big ugly tears when we had to put him in the car, and it was the saddest thing ever.  When we woke up in our own house that next morning, he had all sorts of questions about when we would be back at the lakehouse.  He even went so far as to pick out his clothes for that plane ride next month.
Thankfully, Summer is already flying by, and the 4th of July will be here soon enough!

  3. Oh the goodbyes are always the hardest, but I find are made easier when you have the best visit already planned. Cousins playing together is simply the best. It's funny to see your super blonde kids next to their dark haired cousins... Isn't it amazing how family can look so different!?!

  9. it's too wet! hahahahaha. i totally know what you mean about romanticizing a place that you want to move back to, though i think the realistic parts outweigh the bad parts we ignore, if that makes sense. like i have conveniently forgotten all the bad things about my home or family, because all the good parts i miss and want to move home for outweigh the bad.

  14. What a magical trip! Every time you talk about your parents I feel like I could be writing about mine. I hope you'll get the chance to be back in Washington with them too. I definitely romanticized Kansas a little bit while we were gone, but it's still been pretty wonderful to be home. I'm sure you're counting down the days until your July trip!

  16. I love seeing the relationship your boys have with their nana and pops. Sophie only has grandmas, so I feel like she only gets one side of the spectrum and I know she still has fun but it's different.

The lakehouse looks so beautiful, I can see why you'd want to live there all the time! And of course have your parents and family closer. I hope one day you're able to have that again.

  24. Seems like the older they get, the more they realize what's going on and the harder goodbyes are. This is happening with Myles too. Being away from parent/grandparents is rough.
