My Blessingway

Last Tuesday was an exciting one!  We had our home visit with our midwife, which left me feeling even more excited for baby's arrival.  It made the birth seem so near!  After she left, I began thinking about how I needed to spend more time mentally preparing for the birth.  I wanted to find some new affirmations to give me a fresh mind going into labor.  I put on my cozy pajamas and was ready for a night in!  Well the door bell rang moments before I was about to start cooking dinner..  It was two of my friends who informed me they were taking me for a surprise that evening.  I turned around to find Conor holding up a dress & sandals, all ready for me!

I had no idea what was to come; but, I sure do love surprises!  We drove to the farm near my house, which left me even more baffled.  They walked me to a shady, hidden corner where the rest of my closest gals were waiting!  A banner hung from the trees.  Blankets, pillows, & a delicious feast all spread out in this clearing.  Cue the tears!  I had walked into a surprise blessingway!  A blessingway (also sometimes called a mother's blessing) is an old Navajo tradition which celebrates the journey of childbirth & motherhood.  It's all about celebrating the soon-to-be mom!  Not with gifts but with support & love.  It's about a close group of women coming together as one of their own enters a new stage in life.  Whether it be becoming a mom for the first time or the fifth.  Each experience is unique.  Each comes with new challenges.  And that mom needs support every time.  I love this old tradition, because I'm all about women birthing women.  I want to be surrounded by my community of women & moms during this time.

As we sat down to eat, we discussed our different births.  What I was excited about.  Nervous about.  There were 7 of us, with 16 kids between us so far.  There is knowledge to be shared, advice given.  Many of us could talk birth & babies for hours, and we did!  There was so much warmth in the group.  And love.  I moved into our neighborhood 4.5 years ago, and over that time have grown to appreciate it more than I ever thought possible.  Their homes make a literal circle around mine, which had never crossed my mind before this night.  At the blessingway, we were all given candles to light when I go into labor, and I just love the thought of all their candles lit in their own homes, but also around me.  We all wear a bracelet wrapped around our hands that was once one long piece of yarn.  It's a reminder of the journey ahead and of their support through this time.

All the little details made the evening so special.  It felt so personal to me, that much thought was put into it.  From the beautiful spread (champagne included!), to the sweet affirmations they shared (along with poems & quotes), to the flower crown, the hand & foot massage, to the hugs & the smiles.  Rarely, do we as moms put ourselves first, and that night felt all about me.  Pampered is an understatement.  I left that evening on such a high.  Feeling so lucky to have these women in my life.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from the evening that my friend Shanon read:

It is said that women in labour leave their bodies..
they travel to the stars to collect the souls of their babies,
and return to this world together.
